New Cameroon Forest Hunting Programs

We are very excited about our two new upcoming hunting programs together with our long time French partner in the Cameroon rain forest. One will involve hunting from a satellite camp for 4 or 5 days on the other side of their hunting area where they very rarely hunt. With very little hunting activity in this location, the chances for large Bongo are quite good. When the Bongo is down you will move back to the main Yoko Camp for a couple of nights and then locate to another remote area for some days of hunting there and try for Forest Sitatunga, Forest Duikers and if lucky, maybe have a chance for a very rare species….the Giant Forest Hog which is the hardest game animal to collect in the Cameroon forest

Hunters will need to be in good condition as there will be more walking then the usual forest hunts. Accommodations at the satellite camp are basic in comfort. Bungalows are wood frame and thatch. Remember this is an adventure safari in the rainforest and while accommodations are not as nice as the main camp, the focus is on exploring and hunting in rarely hunted locations. Safari Outfitters will provide camp photos. The price is the same as the regular 13-day Bongo safaris @ $38,000 plus the usual additional expenses. Note: If you are interested in this hunt and want to go this year, we can put you in the above discounted May, 2018 slot however the price will need to be $36,500.

Our other new and very exciting Cameroon forest hunting program is being designed by the outfitter, their PHs and Safari Outfitters. The program completion is close but still in the planning stages and will be finalized in time for the 2019 and 2020 seasons. Because Safari Outfitters is directly involved in the creation of this adventure safari, we will be the exclusive agent for at least two seasons.

This exploratory safari will be a rain forest hunting adventure like no others being offered at this time. Clients must be in good physical condition as there will be more walking involved in the hunting plus fly camps will be moved and set up on foot. The outfitter and PHs will explore the area that is to be used for hunting in advance of the safari. Basically, the PH and hunter will decide which area they want to explore and will be dropped off along a dirt road and follow after on foot. They will hunt and look for fresh Bongo tracks while walking and if found that day, they go after the Bongo and leave the staff to set up camp and prepare everything for the hunter’s return. If fresh tracks are not found that day, a few hours before sunset`they will find a nice location to camp. Once they find the camping spot, the PH, client and trackers will go out for forest duiker leaving the staff to set up camp and make preparations for their return.

The next day camp will be dismantled and keep hunting, walking and looking for fresh Bongo tracks. They will keep doing this for a few days and then go to a dirt road to be picked up and drive back to main camp for a day or so of rest and then go to another area for the same type of hunting. On this walking hunt, there will from 8 to 10 staff for the fly camp plus 4 or 5 trackers and skinners along with the client and professional hunter. Most staff will double as porters along the way. Camp will consist of two small tents, one for the PH and one for the client, a flysheet for the fire, kitchen with food, cooking equipment, buckets, chairs and one table. Once an animal is down, it will be immediately skinned, the trophy put in a bag and porters will set out for a road to be picked up. The calling network is so good that a call to the main camp for pick up is very quick. At main camp the skinners will immediately set to work on fleshing and salting the trophy or trophies.

The distance from the drop off road to the pick up road will probably be no more then 20/25km. In this area there are very few roads, no woodcutters and very few poachers if any as they usually work from main roads which means that the areas they will explore will be completely wild. A very unique and extraordinary experience! Other hunts could involve hunting/camping/walking two or three days to a large river and there using a fisherman’s boat and hunt the river for Forest Sitatunga and other game. Currently the price remains the same as the usual Bongo safari @ $38,000 plus the same additional costs. It is not confirmed yet but not impossible that this hunt could be ready by our only May 2018 opening.
